March 30, 2026, Federated States of Micronesia<\/strong>___<\/strong>The official dedication of the Embassy of the Federated States of Micronesia in Canberra, Australia last week, as well as security and foreign policy agreements, heralds the start of a new era between the two Pacific Ocean neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Simina said, \u201cThis moment represents not only the establishment of a physical presence, but a reaffirmation of our shared history, mutual respect, and the principle of reciprocity that underpins our diplomatic relations,\u201d according to a statement from the Office of the President, Federated States of Micronesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australian Prime Minister Albanese officially stated of the new FSM Embassy and Pacific partnership, \u201cWhen the Pacific is strong, Australia is strong. That’s why working with our neighbours matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two leaders reaffirmed a commitment to the, \u201cOcean of Peace Declaration amid ongoing global tensions and expressed support for Australia\u2019s upcoming candidacy to the United Nations Security Council,\u201d as well as to the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum this August 30 to September 4, 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Simina also met with Australia\u2019s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Chief of Protocol Mr. Jonathan Muir, and Pat Conroy, Minister for Pacific Island Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister Wong said<\/a>, “This visit speaks to the strength of the relationship between Australia and the Federated States of Micronesia and the value we place on further strengthening that partnership. Both our countries share a strong commitment to Pacific priorities, including regional stability, sustainable development and climate resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs further stated that, \u201cFSM and Australia will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance our nations’ maritime security cooperation. This will enable FSM to access support under Australia’s increased investment in maritime security partnerships in the region. FSM will also sign two MOUs to implement the Pacific Policing Initiative \u2013 the key policing cooperation mechanism in the Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will also include an AUD, \u201c$2.5 million package, from within the existing bilateral development budget, to support climate resilience. This will include ensuring girls and children with disabilities have access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation in schools, and support to upgrade emergency evacuation shelters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia\u2019s Chief of Protocol Mr. Jonathan Muir applauded the new FSM diplomatic mission in Canberra, saying, \u201cThe Embassy\u2019s presence here will deepen cooperation across our shared priorities, including regional connectivity, maritime security, climate change, and education. It will also strengthen FSM\u2019s engagement with the Pacific community here in Canberra\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia Minister for Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy said, \u201c<\/strong>President Simina’s visit demonstrates the deepening ties between the Federated States of Micronesia and Australia. The Pacific is on the frontline of the climate crisis, the single largest threat to the lives, livelihoods, culture and security of Pacific communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cThis visit builds on our longstanding cooperation on climate action and disaster resilience, and advances our shared commitment to creating economic opportunities for women and children and to strengthening maritime security.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also signed security MOUs for maritime and shared ocean resources for Pacific police deployments, meeting withTony Burke, Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration and Citizenship, Cyber Security, and the Arts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Others in the FSM official envoy included, \u201cFirst Lady Ancelly Simina, Esmond B. Moses, Speaker of the FSM Congress and spouse Mrs. Aileen Moses, and accompanied by Secretary of Justice Leonito Bacalando Jr., Secretary of Resources and Development Elina P. Akinaga, the Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ricky Cantero, and members of the official delegation,\u201d according to the Office of the President, Federated States of Micronesia.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
