April 15, 2026, Palau___<\/strong> From France to New Zealand to Saudi Arabia, the rearview mirror and forward business posture of Palau at Mid-April 2026 shows full steam ahead towards the 55th<\/sup> Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting from August 30 to September 4, 2026. This builds on late March momentum from the United Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 launch for the Guam hub, connecting Tokyo to Guam to Palau, scheduled for maiden Micronesia flights from April 30th<\/sup> in two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Historic New Zealand Trip<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, President Whipps Jr. is making a historic trip as the first Palau head of state to visit New Zealand, where bilateral security, environment, and trade ties announcements are coming as his three-day trip closes tomorrow, April 16, 2026. New France Ties with H.E. V\u00e9ronique Roger-Lacan, the French Ambassador and Permanent Secretary to the Pacific<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last week on April 6, Her Excellency V\u00e9ronique Roger-Lacan, the French Ambassador and Permanent Secretary to the Pacific, and her diplomatic delegation visited Palau as part of a three country bilateral mission to the Freely Associated States, with trips in Federated States of Micronesia, and Marshall Islands in progress.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Republic of Palau, \u201cThe visit marked an important step forward in the bilateral relationship between Palau and France.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added, \u201cDuring the meeting, both leaders explored several areas of opportunity for future cooperation, focusing on improving air travel connections, enhancing maritime security, and expanding educational opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Micronesia Sun interviewed Ambassador V\u00e9ronique Roger-Lacan and will be covering her bilateral missions to Micronesia in a special three-part report series beginning from Monday, April 20, 2026. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

H.E. Sultan Abdulrahman Al Marshad, Chief Executive Officer delivers US$ 15 million loan for business development from Saudi Fund for Development<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also in the first week of April, Saudi Arabia signed a US$ 15 million loan agreement with Palau, with H.E. Sultan Abdulrahman Al Marshad, Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development officiating with President Whipps Jr. Accompanying H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad was Dr. Saud Ayid Alshammari, Director General of Operations for Asia and Pacific Countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement from the Office of the President, Republic of Palau, President Whipps Jr. said, \u201cThis agreement is about building a stronger Palauan economy. By channeling this financing through the National Development Bank of Palau, Palauan developers, businesses, and entrepreneurs can lead new projects that create jobs, unlock investment, and keep more value here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added, \u201cThe agreement enables the Palau Development Bank to expand financing for key sectors, enhance infrastructure efficiency, create sustainable jobs, and improve living standards, while supporting capacity building, empowering communities, and advancing comprehensive development in Palau.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This marks the first such development partnership between Palau and the Saudi Fund for Development, with Whipps Jr. adding that, \u201cthis could be the beginning of many more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, H.E. Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad and his team were shown Rock Island Southern Lagoon, where, \u201cclose cooperation between the Palauan Government and private investors could protect Palau\u2019s marine life while creating a world-class experience for travelers from around the world,\u201d according to a statement from the Office of the President, Republic of Palau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 Launch Tokyo-Guam-Palau-Pacific Flights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, United Airlines unveiled its first Guam-based Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This will increase connectivity with this state-of-the-art plane servicing routes from Tokyo to the United Guam hub to Palau. These maiden Micronesia flights are scheduled to take off on April 30, 2026, with select services starting between Tokyo-Narita International Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President \u2013 Global Network Planning and Alliances, United Airlines, said, \u201cGuam has long played an important role in our Pacific network, both as a destination and for connecting communities across Micronesia with Asia and the continental United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cThe introduction of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 helps us deliver a more consistent and reliable experience for customers traveling to the 15 destinations we serve throughout the region. We\u2019re proud to invest in Guam and provide local customers and visitors with a premium experience that customers deserve and expect from us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Whipps Jr. emphasized, \u201cthat United Airlines\u2019 service is vital to Pacific economies and helps drive deeper regional cooperation. Strong, modern air links, he noted, are essential for Palau\u2019s tourism, medical referral system, education opportunities, and family connections across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, United Airlines<\/a> noted that the Tokyo-Narita (NRT) to Koror, Palau (ROR) flights on the 737 Max planes will commence from May 2, will all Guam to Tokyo-Narita flights on the 737 Max aircraft commencing by late August.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also by the end of August, United Airlines,\u201dnarrowbody flights from NRT will be operated with a 737 MAX 8 aircraft, as well as all United flights from Saipan (SPN) and Yap (YAP). By December, United expects all its narrowbody flights from Guam, including the Island Hopper service, to be operated with a MAX 8 aircraft.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to United Airlines,\u201cThese flights include the unique Island Hopper route that connects Guam and Hawaii through stops at Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Kwajalein, and Majuro.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the year,\u201cThe 737 MAX 8 will operate to all other points served via United\u2019s Guam hub including Koror, Manila, Saipan, Yap, and Taipei, and routes between Tokyo-Narita and Cebu, Ulaanbaatar, Saipan, Kaohsiung, and Koror.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
