May 18, 2026, Palau<\/strong>__OceanXplorer research vessel arrived in Palau last week for a briefing with President Whipps Jr. to deliver briefings, \u201con the scientific exploration of Palau\u2019s territorial waters,\u201d according to a statement from the Office of the President, Republic of Palau<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part working science lab, film studio, and deep-sea launchpad, the OceanXplorer is a state-of-the-art, 87-meter, \u201cfloating research institution designed for marine scientists from around the globe to comprehensively characterize geological, biological, and oceanographic systems from surface to seafloor,\u201d according to OceanX<\/a>, a non-profit ocean research mission launched by Dalio Philanthropies<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel is<\/a>, \u201cequipped with advanced tools for comprehensive data collection\u201d and features, \u201ca centralized onboard system that provides data analysis and powerful visualization \u2013eliminating the need to send data or samples to external labs for processing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further, \u201cThrough its simultaneous launch capabilities, the OceanXplorer can deploy a unique array of research assets to unlock the secret lives of the ocean\u2019s most mysterious creatures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OceanXplorer\u2019s team presented findings on Palau’s “Blue Economy” through advanced research, with, \u201csupport to the Palau International Coral Reef Center\u2019s (PICRC) five-year study on environmental DNA (eDNA),\u201d allowing \u201chidden\u201d species to be identified from water samples for genetic mapping of Palau\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, their high-resolution scans of the, \u201cocean floor are uncovering previously unknown underwater features, providing vital data to protect fragile ecosystems against climate change. Using ROVs and submersibles at depths of 900 meters and below, the team collected new marine species for molecular inventory and recorded diverse, abundant live coral gardens. Aerial footage also documented significant populations of tuna, short-finned pilot whales, and other megafauna.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
