July 29, 2026, Wellington, New Zealand/Federated States of Micronesia___Over 34 women political leaders from across the Pacific Islands region are gathering in Wellington, New Zealand this week for the “Tuākana-Teina, Whenua, Talanoa Wānanga – Women in Leadership” conference.
According to a statement from the New Zealand Parliament, they are, “bringing together parliamentarians to connect, share experiences, and strengthen relationships across the region.”
According to the New Zealand government, RT Hon Winston Peters said, “We are proud to support Pacific parliamentary cooperation through New Zealand’s overseas development programme and we wish to acknowledge the New Zealand Speaker’s strong support for this initiative. Democratic governance, the rule of law, and accountability to our citizens are core values that bind us all together in our Pacific Blue Continent.”
Peters added, “The Pacific is the central focus of our foreign policy. It’s New Zealand’s front yard and we are linked through our DNA, our history and cultural ties. We also understand the important role of talanoa, or face-to-face meetings, like this one tonight. That’s why we are proud that in this three-year parliamentary term we have travelled to all Pacific Islands Forum countries for talanoa, to hear your views and to discuss our collective aspirations and problems.”
He concluded, “In 2027, New Zealand will have the privilege of chairing the Pacific Islands Forum which will bring together members from across our vast Pacific to advocate for shared regional priorities and the interests of our peoples.”
New Zealand momentum towards the 2027 Pacific Islands Forum will be set in tone next month at the 2026 Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, so Kiwi developments will be key to watch, such the Federated States of Micronesia formally receiving the credentials of Stuart Horne, Ambassador of New Zealand to the Federated States of Micronesia by President Simina last week.
In a statement from his office, “President Simina welcomed Ambassador Horne and conveyed the appreciation of the Government and people of the Federated States of Micronesia for New Zealand’s continued friendship and cooperation as fellow members of the Pacific Family.
“Ambassador Horne expressed his appreciation to President Simina for the warm welcome and reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to its friendship and cooperation with the Federated States of Micronesia. He further affirmed New Zealand’s continued support for educational opportunities for students from the FSM through the New Zealand Scholarship program.
“The meeting reaffirmed the strong and friendly relationship between the Federated States of Micronesia and New Zealand, founded on mutual respect, shared Pacific interests, and a common commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.”
