Tsunami Threat for Guam, CNMI, Palau and FSM

June 8, 2026, Federated States of Micronesia___The US National Weather Service Guam has issued a Tsunami warning this morning for Guam, CNMI, Palau, and the FSM following the 7.8 to 8.2 magnitude earthquake this morning in Mindanao, Philippines.

The warning reads:

Valid Monday, June 8, 2026

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2, revised to 7.8, occurred at 938 AM ChST in Mindanao, Philippines.

There IS a Tsunami Advisory for the Marianas at this time. Palau and Yap should listen to latest information from local WSOs and other officials. Current forecast have waves less than 0.3 meters.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a TSUNAMI Advisory for Guam and CNMI. Listen for information from local officials. Stay out of the water and away fom beaches. Await further information from local officials.”

Following this alert, the FSM Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management (DECEM) issued a warning that U.S. Embassy Kolonia shared stating, “Following a major earthquake near Mindanao, Philippines, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for parts of the western Pacific. While there is currently no confirmed destructive tsunami threat to the FSM, residents and visitors in Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae are urged to stay away from coastal areas, remain alert, and monitor official updates from FSM DECEM.”

According to the Associated Press, “The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) were possible on some coasts of the Philippines. Waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) were possible on some coasts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Smaller tsunami waves were possible in Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea and several island nations and territories in the western Pacific.”
