June 18, 2026, Federated States of Micronesia___The World Bank is supporting Weno Island’s upgrade of the critical East and West Circular Road, according to a statement from President Simina’s office.
The East and West Circular Road is a crucial artery for Weno, as Chuuk state’s capital, supporting logistics, business and medical services ringing 1.87 miles (3 kilometers) of road around Pou Bay.
President Simina said, “Reliable roads are essential to the daily lives of our people. Better roads mean safer travel, stronger connections between communities, and more reliable access to schools, healthcare, businesses, and government services.”
He added, “I am pleased to see this important project moving forward for the people of Chuuk.”
It will be executed by the World Bank-financed Strategic Climate-Oriented Road Enhancements (SCORE) project to, “provide safer and more reliable access for residents, businesses, schools, churches, healthcare facilities, and government offices. The project will address longstanding issues such as deteriorating road conditions, poor drainage, and flooding while strengthening infrastructure resilience to climate-related impacts, including heavy rainfall and erosion.”
The SCORE Project supports the FSM’s efforts to strengthen critical transportation networks and improve resilience to climate-related challenges.
Design commences from July 31, 2026 for five months, with construction to scheduled to start in December of this year, and projected completion timetable of January 2028, according a state from the President’s office.
Chuuk is currently recovering from April’s devastating Typhoon Sinlaku, with US$ 8 million in support from the United States, with Australia, Japan, and the Asian Development Bank also committing essential resources.
