President Heine and Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Waqa Hold Talks

June 30, 2026, Marshall Islands__Marshall Islands President Heine met with Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Baron Waqa this week to discuss a host of, “regional priorities and ongoing Pacific Islands Forum matters.”

The two talked about the Micronesian Presidents’ Summit, which will be a pertinent topic too at the Micronesia Islands Forum being held in Pohnpei July 15-17, 2026.

They also raised the Rarotonga Treaty, or “South Pacific Nuclear Zone Treaty” that bans possession and testing of nuclear weapons. Marshall Islands signed the treaty in March 2025, and its full ratification is in motion.

They also spoke about Marshall’s contribution and updates to the to the Pacific Resilience Facility, including the interim appointment process for its board of directors, as well as otheroutcomes of the Forum Economic Ministers Meeting.

Their talks are also part of the numerous conversations being held across the Pacific Islands region in preparations for the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Meeting in Palau from August 30 to September 4.

President Heine’s office stated, “The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange updates on key regional priorities and ongoing Pacific Islands Forum initiatives, reflecting the shared commitment to regional cooperation and collaboration.”
